Bring Me

summary.

Bring Me is a traditional Filipino game, ever-present at children’s birthday parties. It’s pretty straightforward: one person acts as host and calls out random items to bring over, then players rush over to be the first to bring them. The requests can be as simple as ”Bring Me… a plastic fork” or as oddly specific as ”Bring Me… two people with glasses wearing something shorts.”

After attending an AWS meetup where they talked about Amplify and its different libraries, my husband and I were inspired to develop something using that technology. Using object detection, we created a digital version of Bring Me.

Bring Me is a fun game but it’s only played in parties.

research.

I conducted user interviews with friends and family who have played the game in Philippines and determined what about the game was fun, to learn what mechanics can be ported over to a digital game.

Afterward, I did a quick competitor analysis to see if there were similar games in the market. As it turned out, there was nothing like what I envisioned Bring Me to be. There was another app that did image recognition, but relied only on pre-generated prompts that were too basic. Other apps that required the player to find something usually relied on location instead of image recognition.

To quickly test out how it could work using a phone, I gathered my roommates and played a round using our group chat. We all took turns being the host and gave specific prompts.
